Shangri-La's Fijian Resort won Top 10 Getaways for parents with infants and children in 1999.
We are delighted that so many parents of newborns, and even many who are expecting, are anxious to know where to go, how to get there and what to bring along. Our parent company, www.FamilyTravelForum.com honored these resorts in 1999 and all are worth considering for your first (or first with a baby) family vacation. Here's a look at the resort today.
Shangri-La' s Fijian Resort
Yanuca Island, Fiji
212/768-3190, 866/565-5050
A South Pacific paradise awaits you on the 109-acre private island of Yanuca, just 45 minutes from the airport on Viti-Levu by causeway. You will be treated to warm hospitality and attentive service in a spectacularly luxurious tropical setting. Relax on the serene beach or poolside, or snorkel in the vividly colored coral reefs. If you're feeling more energetic, you can go sailing, play tennis or golf, or work out in the well-equipped gym.
Families are most welcome at Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort, where the variety of lodgings ranges from suites, family rooms and bures (cabins), all taking in the magnificent view of the ocean. Laundry facilities are available to all. In fact, returning guests from Europe and the Pacific are accommodated so comfortably, that stays of two to three weeks are not uncommon! Recently, the beachfront bures were renovated to include two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a lounge, all facing a patio overlooking Yanuca Island lagoon.
The Little Chief's Club, a complimentary, supervised program including swimming races, beach cricket, crab hunting, sandcastle building and Fijian language and storytelling is available year-round for children ages 6-12 from 9am-noon and from 1:30-4:30pm daily. The nursery, or Little Chief's Bure, where caregivers supervise toddlers in a variety of age-appropriate activities, is specifically ideal for 2-5-year-olds. Additionally, there is a free, nightly, supervised children's buffet from 6:30-9:30pm for ages 4 and above with delicious entrees and exotic fruits and flowers arranged on the buffet table.
Children's activity coordinators are on hand to entertain the children during this time so parents can join in the fun or enjoy a romantic, seaside dinner. Private infant care is available daily 7am-1am from experienced Fijian babysitters (approximately FJ $15.00 for a minimum of three hours). If you run short of baby supplies, you can purchase disposable diapers and other international products in the resort's shopping arcade (although they may not all be familiar brands.) Complimentary, fresh baby food is prepared on request by the resort chefs, and delivered by room service.
