"Where the Air is Sweet"
Family Spends Sunny Day at Sesame Place
by Steve Ramkissoon

"Can you tell me how to get to"... a fantastic amusement park where toddlers under 6 can go on all the fun rides?

"Sunny day, Sweepin' the clouds away. On my way, to where the air is sweet. Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?"

Well, here we were leaving the Upper West Side of Manhattan at 8:30am to travel to the famed Sesame Place (100 Sesame Road, Langhorne, PA 19047, 215/752-7070) with our two kids and their friends, all between the ages of 2 ½ and 6-years-old.  We were very skeptical that such a enjoyable place, one that had the power to take you back to your childhood, could only be 1½ hours out of the city.

It actually is true and we made it within that time.  Upon our arrival, we were a little disappointed by the long line for parking which consisted of five lanes... with only 3 booths open.  We waited about 35 minutes to park our car.  I felt that if this was the beginning of our experience it was only going to get worse.

However, as soon as we parked and entered the park, we were greeted with all smiles by the Sesame Place employees.  The lines were moving faster at the front gate and since the weather looked a little overcast, it was not packed as yet.  This was definitely a safe and comfortable family atmosphere.

The first thing you see when you enter the park is the roller coaster so my partner immediately took our older child there, while the rest of us headed off to the "Elmo's" section of the park, which consisted of “Nets & Climbs” which was a huge suspended rope maze.  My 2½-year-old loved it!

We then waited on line for the teacups, then it was off to “Cookie Mountain,” where my little one needed no assistance in climbing since if she fell, it was all cushioned.  She felt like such a big girl.  We also did many of the other dry rides and waited until after lunch to do the wet ones.

After lunch we immediately started with “Big Bird Rambling River,” which I (forget about the kids) absolutely loved.  We have been to many theme parks, however I have always had to deal with the height/age restrictions.  If the kids missed the mark by a fraction they were booted off.  You can imagine what a joy it was to just sail done the river with my 2½-year-old on my lap and my 6-year-old right next to me.

Everyone in our party was having a blast! My older daughter, at age 6, was able to go on almost every ride by herself.  She felt very empowered and adult-like.  Fun was had by all, no matter his or her age.  Almost every water ride after that: “Ernie's Waterworks" or "Little Bird Rapids," "Slimey Shutes," "Sky Splash" and more, were fun for the entire family.  We could have stayed all weekend.

Overall, I would say it was a wonderful experience.  My kids had a blast and that’s how we measure FUN.  I would highly recommend Sesame Place if you want to visit a fun entertainment park with water rides and you have younger kids.  In fact, we saw kids of all ages having fun.

Tip: My one strong recommendation is bring sunblock, except in the restaurants there is not a lot of shaded areas.
